Sendak: «I don’t believe in children. I don’t believe in childhood. I don’t believe that there’s a demarcation. ‘Oh you mustn’t tell them that. You mustn’t tell them that.’ You tell them anything you want. Just tell them if it’s true. If it’s true you tell them.”

Maurice Sendak, autor de, entre otros, Donde viven los monstruos y considerado el más importante ilustrador de libros infantiles del siglo XX, falleció ayer a los 83 años, convertido para siempre en un transgresor y un mito.

“Grown-ups desperately need to feel safe, and then they project onto the kids. But what none of us seem to realize is how smart kids are. They don’t like what we write for them, what we dish up for them, because it’s vapid, so they’ll go for the hard words, they’ll go for the hard concepts, they’ll go for the stuff where they can learn something, not didactic things, but passionate things.” Sendak dejaba a los niños ser lo que ellos querían.

El autor de Mr. Rabbit and the lovely present deja una obra póstuma My brother’s book. Recientemente había publicado Bumble-Ardy, historia en la que un cerdo de nueve años decide celebrar su cumpleaños por todo lo alto, cuando sus padres mueren para ser comidos.

Conocido también por su rechazo implacable a los ebooks: “I hate them. It’s like making believe there’s another kind of sex. There isn’t another kind of sex. There isn’t another kind of book! A book is a book is a book.”
